204 000 habitantsvideo_tampere Tampere’s economic significance motivated Professor Alois Brunnthaler, editor in chief of the Scandinavian Press Service, to initiate a friendship agreement between Linz and Tampere in 1961. He presented a Linzertorte almost one meter in diameter to the Mayor of Tampere, Erkki Lindfors, at a press conference celebrating the new partnership. The twinning agreement was signed in 1995. (Oliver Theusl, town twinning coordinator, city of Linz) Tampere is linked in a partnership not only with linz, but also with Nizhny Novgorod and Brasov. The heart of the city is Keskustori, the main square, which is crossed by Hämeenkatu, the main traffic artery where a bus station is located. Adjacent is a broad open space paved in a multitude of patterns that choreograph the routes of persons crossing the square. By day, the almost constant coming and going of buses and the automobiles rattling over the cobblestones characterize the listening experience. In the still of the night, the waterfall on the Tammerkoski rapids, not far away, can be heard now and then.
