The town twinning between Linz and Halle began in 1967, at the initiative of Linz’s medical examiner and university educator Dr. Klaus Jarosch, with cooperation at the university level between Johannes Kepler University (Linz) and Martin Luther University (Halle-Wittenberg). The twinning agreement was signed in 1975 and renewed in 2005. (Source: Archive, City of Linz)
One of the defining geological structures in the cityscape of Halle is the Halle fault. It was formerly called the ›Halle Marktplatz Fault‹ because the fault line runs directly beneath the main square, crossing Marktplatz diagonally between the Rathaus, the Händel monument, and the market church St. Marien – a unique situation in a major German city.
(From »Faltblatt geologischer Lehrpfad«, Halle Environmental Office, 2002) On the open expanse of the square, no traces whatsoever indicate the ›Marktplatz fault‹, yet people seem to walk along it, to orient themselves by it.
The entire Marktplatz is free of vehicular traffic, apart from morning deliveries and access for taxis or special trips. A complex network of tramlines branches out across the city. At Marktplatz they come together from all directions in a veritable tram ballet.
