What started at the end of World War I with a holiday visit from schoolchildren from Linz am Rhein to the Upper Austrian capital, and continued in 1923 with a Christmas donation of food parcels from the volunteer fire brigade of Linz on the Danube to their colleagues on the Rhine, has developed over the decades into a vibrant town twinning that has fostered countless personal friendships. The twinning agreement was signed in 1987. (From »All around the world. Twin Cities of Linz«, City of Linz, 2008)
The small town of Linz am Rhein, with its narrow streets and well-preserved medieval half-timbered architecture, presents itself as a gem from a bygone era. On nice days it is veritably flooded with tourists walking the hiking and excursion routes along the Rhine. But in the morning, the old town and its many shops still belong to the residents, who go purposefully about their business. Feeder brooks that once flowed directly through town on their way to the Rhine now meander underground and are visible only in the patterning of the pavement. Now and then a brook surfaces to feed a fountain.
