Having attained prosperity as the centre of the Swedish textile industry, Norrköping has a predominantly bourgeois cityscape. Textile production has long since ceased – and been replaced by knowledge-intensive industrial sectors such as aircraft engineering, communications, and biotechnology.
As in Linköping, regular meetings of experts and cultural exchange take place here as part of »Sweden Days« and »Linz Days«. Linz’s twinning agreements with Linköping and Norrköping arose from the same initiative and both were signed in 1995.
(From »All around the world. Twin Cities of Linz«, City of Linz, 2008)
In the middle of the centre city around the Motala ström, where industry once used the water’s energy to power pulsing machines in the factory buildings, we look out a window of the now silent Museum of Work at the pulse of pedestrians.
The machines are long gone, the sound of the constantly rushing water remains.
